A private 5 hour tour of the Lake District
Follow in the footsteps of Beatrix Potter as we take a tour of the Lake District visiting the places that she loved and lived in and which inspired her books.
Child-friendly tour
This tour is especially popular with children. We can accommodate children and infants of all ages on all our tours and infant/child seats are available at no extra cost.
After departing from Windermere Railway Station, our tour will take in the following Beatrix Potter attractions:
Holehird Gardens
Beatrix Potter stayed at Holehird twice with her family where she enjoyed wandering through the woodland painting watercolours of toadstools.
Only the gardens are open to the public, and they boast some stunning Lake District views. There is also a lovely walled garden.
Ambleside
Passing through the quaint village of Troutbeck we make our way to the popular tourist resort of Ambleside. Here we will make a brief stop at Waterhead, at the head of Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England.
Wray Castle
Beatrix Potter’s family rented Wray Castle for their summer holidays in 1882, when she was 16 years old. Beatrix loved to spend her time in the library, her favourite room. This fabulous room has been recently renovated with a trompe l’oeil and restored floor.
Admission to the Castle is not included in the tour price.
Hawkshead
This tiny village with its narrow cobbled streets is home to the Beatrix Potter Gallery, housed in the former office of her husband, the solicitor William Heelis. The gallery features an exhibition of Beatrix Potter’s original drawings and illustrations.
Admission to the Gallery is not included in the tour price.
Hill Top, home of Beatrix Potter
Beatrix bought Hill Top in 1905 with the proceeds from her first published books. In this small 17th century stone house she created some of her most popular characters, including Jemima Puddleduck, Tom Kitten and Samuel Whiskers.
Admission to Hill Top is not included in the tour price.
Tarn Hows
Beatrix acquired the Monk Coniston Estate in 1929. The estate formerly belonged to James Gareth Marshall, who built dams to create Tarn Hows by combining 3 small tarns and who planted many of the conifers that surround the lake. Tarn Hows is very picturesque in all seasons with its deep blue water.
Coniston & Yew Tree Farm
Passing through the village of Coniston we come to Yew Tree Farm, a traditional hill farm which was saved from being turned into a forestry plantation by Beatrix Potter when she purchased it as part of the Monk Coniston Estate. It was named after a huge Yew tree that was 700 years old when felled. It is now owned by the National Trust.
